Grand Portage is a beautiful new casino that offers 24-hour-a-day gaming. Connected to the casino is a cozy 100-room lodge. The casino as well as the lodge offers nonsmoking facilities. Portage is the only casino on the north shore of Lake Superior. The casino is as cozy a s the lodge, with only 8 blackjack tables and 400 slot machines, reminiscent of old Las Vegas. The Cook County Fair in late August is an annual event. The area is dotted with motels such as Best Western and resorts such as the Bearskin Lodge (two-star, with a private beach for the summer and all winter sports). Isle Royale National Park is a picturesque island 22 miles out on Lake Superior. Regular boat trips are scheduled in summer. Wildlife that lives here obtained access by crossing the frozen lake in winter. The Trail Center next to the Hotel/ Casino provides the outdoor sportsman with hiking and cross-country skiing.
